I found if you care about winning events, then you build stuff for the game but otherwise if you decide on your own goals and pursue them and enjoy the game then you win.

The game I had the most fun in, were the ones where I did my own thing and not worried about success or failure of events. It's fun to win, mind you but when my enjoyment is not directly tied to that I find myself with much less anxiety. It can be nice when you find a build that is optimal and also pursue your own goals, which is the dream but not always easy to achieve.
