[D8 EE] PLAYER EVENT: Iaijitsu Tournament

[Hantei Genji]

Doji Hikaru and Hantei Genji cordially invite you to a tournament of quick draw dueling, the noble art of iaijitsu. With the secondary goal of reenacting the famed tourney of the kami, and the primary goal of enjoying yourself against worthy opponent, Genji and Hikaru stand gladly against anyone who wishes to try their merits against them. Perhaps some would rather avoid iai after the duel earlier that day, or perhaps...even embrace it? Who knows! The two companions at least were ready for anyone to come.

I choose you!: Choose either Genji or Hikaru as your opponent. This will determine the upcoming TN-s for your rolls, and what kind of points/rewards you’ll accrue. Opponents must be specified in Orokos log, otherwise rolls will not be accepted. Please note this event is to simulate the circumstances of an actual duel, but it is abstracted, so not all relevant mechanical bits will be applicable. Techniques dependent on initiative (Kenku bushi, Nanzi bushi, Bayushi bushi) do NOT apply, nor will we deal with stances.

Assessment: Roll iaijitsu (Assessment)/Awareness against the following TN based on your chosen opponent.
Genji: 20
Hikaru: 20
A successful roll nets you a Stag or Crane point, and every raise nets you another point. In case of failure, your tn on the Focus roll increases by +2 for every called raise. Additionally, passing this roll grants a Free Raise on the ‘Focus’ step, plus 1k0 for every raise called on this roll.

Focus: Roll Iaijitsu (Focus) / Void against the following TN based on your opponent:
Genji: 25
Hikaru: 35
Center stance bonus does NOT apply. A successful roll nets you a Stag or Crane point, and every raise nets you another point. In case of failure, your tn on the Strike roll increases by +2 for every called raise. Nanzi Bushi 1 grants a free raise on this roll.

Strike: Roll Iaijitsu (Strike) / Reflexes against the following TN based on your opponent:
Genji: 23
Hikaru: 20
A successful roll nets you a Stag or Crane point, and every raise nets you another point. This is treated as an attack roll for purposes of modifiers.

Gain two Stag or Crane points if you passed both Focus and Strike rolls.

Rewards: Depending on your opponent, the rewards are the following:
Genji: The person with the most Stag points will gain acknowledgment from Genji, and be extolled publicly in court/game of letters for their skills, as well as an invitation to visit the Hantei dojo.
Hikaru: The person with the most Crane points will gain acknowledgement from Hikaru. They will also be invited to visit the Nanzi doji, and have an audience with Lord Nanzi.

[Kakita]

Kakita approached Hikaru and with a slight smile on his lips…

“You ready?”

He walked out onto the staging area that had been prepared. Kakita’s saya was on the opposite side that it normally occupied…. His left hand being placed in the dominant position.

He looked at Hikaru with a knowing smile… the roaring of the waterfall majestically providing background for their duel.

Then suddenly the world seemed to stop… the water held its place in the air… the sounds of the forest frozen in time… the snow paused majestically to frame the world.

Kakita was behind Hikaru… strikes placed in locations only his opponent could have perceived.

And the world began to move once again…

[Hisomu Matsu]

Matsu opted to attend the Iai event. The choice as to who to face was easy. The Stag Prince would be a worthy opponent, and a chance to visit Stag Lands seemed more promising than going anywhere near where the Crane were.

Bowing to Genji, she began. Reading him was inscrutable, leaving her unsure of how to center herself.

Yet when the time came, she focusee completely, sensing the very soul of herself and her opponent, two beings in a single perfect moment.

Her Katana rang out in a single strike. Nothing fancy, but giving q cut to the man's kimono. Bowing again, she stepped away to watch the rest of the event.

[Yoshitsune Chizu]

Her father had claimed this “iaijutsu” thing was just a fad among the poncy Crane types and would never catch on. But Genji seemed interested in it, so Chizu decided to show up and give it a try.

The stick they gave her seemed awfully light, but she gripped it like a tetsubo and tried a few practice swings. It didn’t seem too bad, she thought. Stick fighting could be useful to know.

Then the time came for her duel with Genji. They assumed their sword-fighting stances and began “assessment”, as the iaijutsu people called it.

Despite having spent hours with the young Stag earlier in the season, she suddenly realized…. this was the first time they had really locked eyes. It felt shockingly intimate. Chizu’s eyes flew wide and color began to fill her cheeks. She fought the urge to drop her gaze.

Then Genji started moving towards her. Not sure what to do, Chizu panicked and thwacked the young Stag on the side of the head.

“Oh no!” Chizu said, sounding shocked as she dropped the stick and covered her mouth with both hands. But Genji seemed unhurt, so it turned out okay.

[Togashi Satsuki]

Satsuki thought this draw-your-sword-really-fast-duelling was kind of dumb. But hey, show up to support her cousin, and Hikaru. And maybe it would help her think of something else.

Giving the training bokken a few swings, she clearly knew how to handle a sword! But doing this formalised staredown and focus... ugh... nope.

BONK! went the bokken as Satsuki gave Genji a good bop on the head, but he was still the fastest.

[Hisomu Susumu]

Susumu is a a bit late, but he still sizes up his opponents and sees Matsu best Genji

Ho boy, let's see if I can cut that off at the pass

"Genji-san, if you are free, I would enjoy a chance to test myself against you."

After the intimidating Matsu, Susumu doesn't look my much. But while Matsu had been focuses on real fights, Susumu had been preparing for a different type, the ones for show. While Matsu balances all attributes necessary for a warrior to fight, Susumu is all fast twitch, and a courtiers training to read his opponent.
