Sora appraised the sailor.

"Never too late to learn, you know. Reiko-sensei started teaching me during the Tournament, when I was already twenty-one winters. Before then I'd barely even heard of the concept."

"You're not the first Jiyo to say as much to me," Gusai replies. "Ayumu even mentioned you as an example."

He gets a sheepish look--a difficult thing, given the eyepatch. "I'd meant to start on that today, in fact."

"Ah, Ayumu. He's a good kid." Sora nodded, as if for emphasis.

"Well, if you're looking to get started, you won't lack for teachers here."

He frowned.

"Actually, if you weren't at sea so much, you probably wouldn't lack for teachers in the Stag lands..."

"I'm aware," Gusai replies. "But I am at sea a lot, of course. Duty demands sacrifices from us all.

"But I will work on things as I can. Even afloat, a sailor's not on watch at all hours."

Gusai nods, then pauses, his brow wrinkling.

"Is writing so powerful that all can be put in it, then?" he asks. "I mean, can you learn to sail just from what a sailor writes, or learn to fight from what a bushi does?"

"No."

Sora chuckled.

"No, I wouldn't go that far. But it can be a massive help to the learning process. Stating common mistakes can help those just getting started avoid them. Offering up advice you wish you'd gotten decades prior... it's quite a thing."

Gusai is visibly relieved as he nods.

"Good," he says. "I'd hate to think that learning by doing wouldn't happen anymore.

"And there are some things that shouldn't be open to all, really."
