Old Hiro had seen a lot in his time. The gods had arrived in the Protected Lands, and their influence spread across them. Towns were bustling like they never had before. Especially now, on the eve of the big wedding at the new palace.
The omens around them had almost always been good. His mother had taught him to read them as a child. She had always told him that it's better to know them and be prepared for something that doesn't come than be caught unprepared in case the signs are right. It had served him well, and now he was pushing 85 years old. While his body was creaky, knowing the signs had protected him and his family all these many years. His children were successful merchants, and their children were taking on their job and passing their knowledge onto their own kids, one of whom was perched on his knee as he looked out over the town. Ravens were perched on many of the buildings, twitching their head back and forth to look around. More than he'd seen in a long time.
He put his finger up to the wind for a moment, closing his eyes. His great-granddaughter, Yoko, looked up at him in confusion. "Great-grandfather?"
He looked down, his thin wrinkled face breaking into a kind smile for her. "You know, Yoko-chan, it's always important to be prepared. Close your eyes and feel the wind. Where is it coming from?"
She did, small face screwing up in concentration for a moment. "The... south...?"
He nodded, approving. "Yes, indeed... Yes, indeed. A chill wind coming from the south, and ravens all over... Something rough is coming, I think. Best we get ready for some heavy weather, at least."
"Wow... You know the future?" She asked as she hopped to her feet.
"I know the signs. I can teach you, if you want," he said, getting up with a bit of difficulty and taking her hand.
She nodded eagerly as they went inside. "Yeah!"
