It’s been all of 20 years since everyone was tribal. Not sure the stratification is quite that solid yet. So all the management and governing class are samurai (but the vast majority weren’t born so), but not all folks considered samurai now fit into that class. Getting workers to ID with their oppressors is classic anti-labor trickery. ;p

I mean you apply the lack of stratification from tribal to feudal to explain why samurai might not be a cohesive class...then follow it up with an analysis based on the social and class relationships of a modern capitalist society.

Social Classes

Social classes have become more stratified in the twenty years since the kami arrived. While once the leaders of the tribes did similar work to their followers in the day to day, the concept of the Celestial Order has spread, especially among the Stag and Crane. Warriors and farmers are now specialized into their particular jobs, with leaders now coming from the warrior class, called samurai, with the Kami at their head. Servants of the Kami oversee large areas and key holdings.

So we're in the start of having caste. The Crane and the Stag have gone full hog on it compared to everyone else, but per Birb it's more or less happening all over the Empire.

But it is an interesting thought though...

Because, at this point in time, people are able to specialize. Food supplies and food security is probably at this point at an unprecedented high, due to the fact that many people can focus exclusively on agriculture, another group can focus on crafting/repairs, and none of them have to have their work ruined or halted because they need to fight off raiders - you now have a specialised group for that. Literacy is also spreading because you have people who have time to study it and then teach it to others.

So for groups that are "refusing" this Order, they are seeing less advancement overall.

I don't think that a caste system necessitates a celestial boot stomping on a human face forever. It does have some inequalities. How much, what kind, and how much cruelty is involved is more up to implementation.

As long as people know their place and see the benefits of this divine arrangement they will prosper, if they resist, then they will bring undue suffering to themselves and others.
