[Day 6 - EE] The Play Event Thread (Player Event)

Event Rules

The Actors

The actors play the roles in the play sometimes multiple as they wear masks provided by the Crane to portray their given character. This is an amateur work based on the stylings of Doji artisans and artists, to emphasize the voluntary nature of the Rescue of Hisomu, symbolizing that virtue comes from action.

Finding my Motivation

The actor should get into the headspace of the character or characters they will portray, they can do one of two ways, they can meditate on the matter and focus on the connection of all things in Creation, or they can rely on their knowledge of proper action to guide them in their performance. Meaning they can make a Meditation + Void check at TN 15 or an Etiquette + Awareness check at TN 15 to find their motivation. If they succeed, they can reduce the TN of the next step by 5 and they can call raises on this check as well with each raise granting +1k0 to the roll, but a failed roll with raises reduces the check by -1k0 per raise called.

The Method Matters

Now the actor must act, they can do this in one of three ways; they can rely on the Doji artisan method of traditional theater, they can try this new fangled Scorpion technique of method acting, or they can eschew that and just focus on singing and damn the rest!

Choose one of three methods:

Doji Artisan Method: This a style emphasizing melodrama and extreme emoting and action, it is traditional and the style favored by the Doji players and most familiar to many. This Is an Acting + Awareness check at TN 15 and a success grants 3 Theater Points, each raise called grants an additional Theater Point.

Method Acting: This is a style that was spearheaded by Bayushi Fenixu, and involves relying on sincere and expressive performance by identifying and understanding the experience of the character. They don’t play the role; they are the role. To this end the player may choose Athletics + Awareness, Hunting + Awareness, Weapon Skill + Awareness, or Lore Shadowlands + Awareness at TN 20 and a success grants 3 Theater Points, each raise called grants an additional Theater Point.

I am here to Sing: The actor is here to deliver a powerful singing performance, and they will not be stopped. The player makes a Perform Sing + Awareness check at TN 15 and a success grants 3 Theater Points, each raise called grants an additional Theater Point.

For any of these steps if the roll is failed by 15 or more then 1 Theater Point is deducted from the total. Method Acting is an exception, if the roll is failed by 10 or more they do not reduce the total but get lost in the role, they still get the 1 point but it is highly encouraged that they trigger an emotional disadvantage such as Lost Love or Jealousy.

The Audience

In any live performance the audience is an integral part of the performance, their reactions, observations and even criticism feed the energy of the players and their participation is key to a beautiful performance. In general, the audience can give praise, critical observation, or even realize in the case of this play that the events didn’t happen as portrayed or as they remember.

Audience members get a single roll from one of the three options:

Praise and Participation: The audience member enjoys the events or at least has a positive experience and reflects that in their mood and posture. They can make an Etiquette + Awareness check at TN 15 to provide proper but warm feedback to the players and play, success granting 1 Theater Point. They can lower the TN by 5 if they decide to cheer and be uncouth but that is generally frowned upon by the Crane though other clans may not care. Raises can be made on the roll and each successful raise grants 1 additional Theater point; if the roll is failed by 10 or more then they subtract 1 Theater Point from the total.

Critical Assessment aka Well Actually…: The audience member analyzes the events of the play and provides feedback to their neighbors or anyone that will listen. They can make either a Games Sadane + Awareness check at TN 20 or a Lore Shadowlands + Intelligence check at TN 20 with success granting 2 Theater Points, and each additional raise granting an additional Theater Point again if the roll is failed by 10 or more they subtract 1 Theater Point for being a nuisance.

No Hantei did not Explode, that’s non-canonical!: The audience member was there or maybe read about it and is pretty sure this isn’t how things happened. They can correct others or give their exalted opinion by making a Meditation + Intelligence check at TN 25 to properly recall the events or a Lore History + Intelligence at TN 25 to relate the proper events as laid out by the sages with success on the roll granting 3 Theater Points and each additional raise granting another Theater Point, but if the roll is failed by 5 or more they reduce the Theater Point total by 1. Advantages or Techniques that apply to memory can apply here.

All points are pooled and tallied, and the success of the Play will be determined by the total. If 14 points are accrued then the play is a success, the table with values for more explicit rewards will be forthcoming.

Rewards
  • 0 to 13 points: The Play is poorly received and it is not a success and well maybe it's just so bad that it's bad.
  • 14 to 25 points: The play is a success and the Mask of each player is mounted in the Camellia House with their names to honor them.
  • 26+ points: The play is very successful and so inspired that the Crane build a koi pond and garden, with an outdoor stage, to honor the play and the Camellia House, small monuments to each actor are erected throughout the garden and the garden will be called, Consort's Garden Theater.
OOC: Please roll here if in the audience or a player. Magic allowed for the actors.

Gusai attends the play, thinking A patient man does well to observe, and what roles are taken on matter.

And he finds the performance to his liking, offering encouraging words that can easily be imagined against the actors' work--especially that of the young lord. They even fit in with Crane notions of decorum, surprisingly enough from a sea-captain.

Kinsen is certainly amused and deeply honored by such a magnificent initiative from the Crane. She holds a tear of happiness when she sees Genji impersonating his father and opens a wide, proud smile when she Dojihime perfoming a tribute to Kinsen herself. She can't help but to nod positively to all those that find the connection with her presence in the audience.

by Yoshitsune Chizu
Yoshitsune Chizu had wheedled the director of the play into allowing the big Crab to take one of the roles as a last minute substitution. Donning the heroine’s kabuki mask, Chizu resolved to bring glory to the woman she now thought of as a benefactor.

The figure of “Hantei Kinsen” strode onto the stage during Act 3, masked and armored for battle. Through some miracle of the actor’s art, Dojihime (?) seemed taller… larger…. more heroic than she had been in the earlier rehearsals. “Kinsen” strode across the staged battlefield like an avenging goddess, dispatching countless shadowy figures as the champions sought to sell their lives dearly.

Imperial Samurai - VERY OBVIOUSLY JIYO SORA - looked... fitting for the part. A mask covered the pretty face of the actor, and a last-minute addition was a red flower or some such that would represent the miscolored eye of the Imperial hero.

The actor was clearly living out her fantasy as a foul-mouthed warrior, wearing shabby clothes. But behind the rough exterior of the cursing and unseemly scratching, and frequent remarks of "THAT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENED!", whenever it was their turn to sing their parts it was truly sublime. It was a bit of a poor match with the role to have such a lovely voice, but the overall performance was memorable either way.

Hikaru did his best. He really did.

But he was trying to portray Nanzi. The man who married Lady Doji, the woman he'd sworn to serve, and idolized. The man who created the school of swordsmanship he practiced. It didn't help that somehow his white lock of hair found its way outside of the circlet he wore, swaying awkwardly about to move. Well, clearly the solution was to not move.

That wasn't great either.

How did Nanzi stand? What angle did he hold his head at? What did he do with his hands?!?! Hikaru had met Lord Nanzi perhaps a hundred times, and yet at the moment all he could imagine was his stern gaze. Well... perhaps that was something.

... it wasn't.

Holding a stern gaze was not conducive to singing, and while he had a fine voice, it was too soft. When his part was done, it was a pale and embarrassed Hikaru that stumbled from the stage, finally able to move his arms again.

Genji stepped out from the curtains, a spitting image of his father. He wore his armor, a gift from his father, his expression matched the stoic neutrality on usual display. He had heard the stories, mostly from his mother, but on occasion, from his father as well. He knew what went down, or at least a version of it.

He tried imagining himself in his father's shoes as he acted, imitating the skills that he honed through practice with him. Although he was lost in the role, those who knew his father could see him reflected in his son.

Tsubaki was present to support the Crane, of course, even if the topic at hand was somewhat distasteful to her.

With her training, though, that distaste was likely completely unapparent.

Ayumu was comfortably seated and was taking notes.

A lot of notes.

So much notes that to make a full book out of them, he will simply have to bind them together.

He was just missing a title. What about "The rescue of Hisomu, the myth and the reality: When art tramples on the lessons of history instead of teaching them".

He was already feeling tired at the quantity of extra work the historians will have to pull just to compensate for the damages of this single performance.

This was the first time that Yatsufusa has tried to act. Well, not the first truly since the event of the Stag ball, in which he acted as a fox, kinda. This time Yatsu could not find calmness and his nervousness played against him.

But once he shown into the scene he did made an adequate job in acting without having any training on it. He tried to show the weakness of the realm of evil and its corrupted denizens. Failures in front of the mightly light of Amaterasu-no-kami and its valiant followers of course.

His lame leg made him look like an oni, and he acted as one, but a weak one and coward, no worthy of the brave heroes that saved Hisomu-no-kami. For someone who never had acted before, he did quite fine.

The costumers said to make the opening song memorable, so Moshi takes various pieces of scenery and glides through as she plays the Spider Samurai. Showing upmost physicality and narm. If anyone thought this play was going to be 100% serious before, they, for sure, don't now. This also has the effect of making everyone else more comfortable with their acting.

Kyosei watched the play. At first, he was fine with the slight changes; even at this early point in the Empire, he knew that some clans were trying to use the Arts to influence the future. However, as it went on, his brow drew deeper, and his frown grew. He had to try to center himself to not make an outburst about the many, many, MANY (many) things it was portraying wrong!

She seethed. It started when she saw no one was playing her father. The Last of the Noriaki. It simmered and boiled through the second act. Rage in her eyes burning until the fourth act. Howling in anger, the woman warrior roared, finding the nearest thing to throw at the stage.

"Whoever ever wrote this trash is a liar! How dare they remove the importane of Yamadono of the Noriaki, my father! The man who held the shield open to descend into hell itself, and not one actor! Not one mention! To hell with the author, and any who dare support this shit!"

Kogi is present in the audience but didn't join in the cheering and hollering one way or another, except for quietly applauding the performance of 'Hantei-no-Kami.' To her surprise she finds herself observing the audience as much as the action on stage. Putting on such an inventive re-telling of this event in front of so many people who had been there, or were close to others who'd been there, is certainly a... bold choice.

Nozomi is present for the event, but it is clear that she has little interest in seeing the play proceed beyond the performance of one evening. Deeming it, in her mind, a farcical comedic portrayal that was ill timed as it was within the lifespan of those present, she does not make a distinct effort to improve the play's standing. Most of her criticism is kept private, not shared more than subtly, as she is aware of the old saying

"no press is bad press."

============

(OOC: No rolls made to increase the standing. While she could easily roll poorly enough to cause a reduction in theater points, she's not drawing attention to her attendance more than strictly necessary.
