Horse Flag-catching race questions

Post by Chai Kotsume » Sun Jun 27, 2021 11:28 am

I should probably have set a question thread for this one earlier? I know it's a bit complex, but I'm hoping those who choose to participate will have fun :D

Please ask any questions here!

Also - Since some people may be having trouble understanding how it goes, here's two sets of example rolls - let's say from two test-runs done by Kotsume while she was doing the preparations for the race!

One actual test run using results from Orokos:
Part 1 - Earn trust or eat dust
D7 LM - Earn trust or eat dust - example roll. Animal Handling/ Awa, 1 CR, TN 15: 9d10o10k4 32 - Actually keeping 20 (12, 3, 3, 2). Pass with 1 CR.
Total from Part 1 = 16/2 = 10 Speed points + 2 Speed points from CR = 12 Speed points

Part 2 - Hold on tight or bid goodnight
D7 LM - Hold on tight or bid goodnight - Horsemanship/ Agility TN 15; Keeping (12, 3, 3, 2) = 20 from Part 1; falls on 15 or lower.: 4d10o10k3 34 - Passes and doesn't fall!
Total from Part 2 = 34 Speed points (no Raises called)

Part 3 - Blaze a trail to lose your tail
D7 LM - Blaze a trail to lose your tail. Hunting/ Perception, 1 CR, TN 20: 5d10o10k3 18 - She FAILS with 1 CR here;

Total from Part 3 = 0 Speed points (fail) - 3 Speed points (Fail with 1 CR) = -3 Speed points

Part 4 - Home straight, or sit and wait.
D7 LM - Home straight or sit and wait - example roll. Horsemanship/ Willpower TN 20: 4d10o10k3 29 - And she succeeds

total from Part 4 = 29 Speed points (success).

Grand total for the race:
Part 1: 12 Speed points +
Part 2: 34 Speed points +
Part 3: -3 Speed points +
Part 4: 29 Speed points = 72 Speed points!

And then another example - let's say this one happened after Kotsu had drunk too much of the soju she got from Susumu in the Wilderness Race!
Part 1 - Earn trust or eat dust
Let's say Kotsu calls TWO RAISES, so TN 20, and gets a 14.
Total for Part 1: 14/2 = 7 Speed points - 5 Speed points for failing - 4 Speed points for failing with 2 CR = -2 Speed points))

Part 2 - Hold on tight or bid goodnight
Now let's say she fails here again - and miserably so, with a 9. That's 5 lower than her Part 1 roll, so she fails AND falls from the horse!

Let's say then she at least succeeds in her Athletics/ Reflexes roll when falling.
She would then have:
Total for Part 2: (9 Speed points - 5 speed points for failing) = 4 speed points; -10 speed points from falling without hurting herself = -6 Speed points

Part 3 - Blaze a trail to lose your tail
In this case, let's say she decided to go with the flow (rolling Raw Void with 1 CR, so TN 20) and got incredibly lucky with a 25.
She would then have:
Total for Part 3: (25/2 = 12.5 Speed points (Success) + 5 Speed points (1 CR)) = 17.5 Speed points.

Part 4 - Home straight - or sit and wait
Annoyed with her performance so far, she gets greedy while trying to gallop back quickly, calling 2 CR (so TN 30), but falls short with a 20.
Total for Part 4: (20/10 = 10 Speed points (fail) -4 Speed points (Fail with 2 CR)) = 6 Speed points

Her total for this second run would have been:
Part 1: -2 Speed points +
Part 2: -6 Speed points +
Part 3: 17.5 Speed points +
Part 4: 6 Speed points = 15.5 Speed points and a frustrated Ki-rin.
Note it's possible, although unlikely, that someone may end the race with negative points!

Hope this helps for any who may be having trouble understanding this one!
