Horse Flag-catching race (aka 'My Little Pony') [D7 LM, Player Event]

by Chai Kotsume
Since Shinjo asked Chaihime to tame and improve the wild horses in the northwestern regions of the Empire, horse breeding and riding has become a blossoming tradition among the Ki-rin - one that is arguably growing into a hallmark of the Clan and may remain so in the centuries to come, some say. To honour this tradition, after some time surveying the areas around the palace and discussing the necessary organization with members of the Imperial Court over the last few days, Chai Kotsume invites all guests at the Imperial Palace to a horse race!

For this race, Kotsume and some others who helped with the organization have distributed various flags in fifteen points around the Castle Town and the surrounding wilderness. Handing each participant a map marking where each set of numbered flags has been placed, she tells the participants that the race will consist on riding to each of the fifteen locations, in no particular order, getting one flag at each one, then return to the starting point with a full set of flags numbered from one to fifteen.
Event Rules
Place: Castle town and surrounding wilderness
Horses for Participants: 7 horses (all rokugani ponies) are available, including Kotsume's Ryuusei. If more than 7 competitors show up, the rules are the same but we'll assume more heats happened!)
Spectators : As many as want to come watch and talk about stuff while waiting for the riders to return!

The race will consist of four Parts, as the competitors establish a connection with their horses and encourage them to run, spur them forward while keeping a firm grip and dealing with obstacles to avoid falling, find the best path to gather all fifteen flags, and finally rush back to the starting point. The rules for each of the four parts are explained below.

Part 1 - Earn trust or eat dust
Before the race even starts, the competitors must establish a good connection with their animals, encouraging them to build up speed and keep steady. Roll Animal Handling (Horses)/ Awareness at TN 10, and add half the result of your roll as SPEED POINTS. If you fail, you reduce 5 SPEED POINTS from your total as the apprehension between you and your horse hamper your efforts. Each Raise called to this roll adds 2 SPEED POINTS to your total if you succeed, but REDUCES 2 SPEED POINTS from your total if you fail.

Note that you can choose to keep lower dice in this roll. When rolling for Part 2, please note down in the description which dice you kept during Part 1, as this will affect the results!

Part 2 - Hold on tight or bid goodnight
As you proceed through the course through the wilderness for the flags, riding through the snow and mud on the riverside, you'll try to keep your horse galloping as fast as possible while also maneuvering it to avoid or jump over obstacles and keeping a firm grip to avoid falling or getting bucked off. Roll Horsemanship/ Agility at TN 15, and add the total of your roll as SPEED POINTS. If you fail, you reduce 5 SPEED POINTS from your total. Each Raise called to this roll adds 3 SPEED POINTS to your total if you succeed, but REDUCES 3 SPEED POINTS from your total if you fail.

If your total result on this roll (ignoring raises) is 5 or more lower than your roll in Part 1 (ignoring raises, and considering the dice you chose to keep), you fall from your horse during your progress through the course as you cannot control your horse well enough after encouraging it to dart forward! If this happens, you may roll an Athletics/ Reflexes or Athletics/ Stamina check at TN 20 to avoid the brunt of the fall. If you succeed, you fall on your feet or recover quickly, and as a result you avoid hurting yourself, but lose 10 SPEED POINTS. If you fail, you hurt yourself during the fall, losing 20 SPEED POINTS instead, and suffering a -3 penalty to all further rolls during the race.

Part 3 - Blaze a trail to lose your tail
While all participants received a map of the area around the castle showing where each of the groups of numbered flags is located, deciding on the best order to catch them and finding the best route to get to each of them is not a straightforward process. Roll one of Hunting (Trailblazing)/ Perception, Lore: Cartography/ Intelligence or a Void Ring roll at TN 15 to either find the best paths through the forest and snow, plan ahead for the best possible routes to take, or simply seek a connection with your surroundings instead of actively looking for or thinking about the best way to follow. Success adds half the result of your roll as SPEED POINTS, while failure adds no SPEED POINTS at all as you lose time finding the right trails and thinking about the path you should follow during the race. Each raise called to this roll adds 5 SPEED POINTS to your total if successful, but reduces 3 SPEED POINTS from the total if the roll fails.

Precise Memory applies to this roll if you use Lore: Cartography, but not otherwise.

Way of the Land for the Imperial City adds 0k1 to this roll.

Part 4 - Home straight - or sit and wait
After collecting all fifteen flags, it's time to make a final sprint back to the finishing line! Roll Horsemanship/ Willpower at TN 20. If you succeed, add the total of your roll as SPEED POINTS; if you fail, add half the result of your roll as SPEED POINTS instead. Each raise called to this roll adds 3 SPEED POINTS to your total if successful, but reduces 2 SPEED POINTS from your total instead if the roll fails.

NOTE: Using academic knowledge
You can choose to use Lore: Nature instead of the listed skill (but using the Trait listed in the event!) for any of the rolls in this Event, EXCEPT for the Athletics roll if you fall off your horse. However, the TN of rolls using Lore: Nature is higher and progressively increased, as relying on academic knowledge to perform practical activities is sub-optimal and almost certain to lead to problems at some point...

The TN of rolls using Lore: Nature is increased by 5 the first time the skill is used during the event, and by an additional 5 each time it is used after the first.

In other words:
First use of Lore: Nature: +5 to the roll's TN
Second use of Lore: Nature: +10 to the roll's TN
Third use of Lore: Nature: +15 to the roll's TN
Fourth use of Lore: Nature: +20 to the roll's TN

Rewards
Chai Kotsume will grant a reward to the three fastest riders (i.e. those with more SPEED POINTS!).

1st place: Invitation to visit Chai lands near the Great Western River to see some of the family's stables and talk to the family's horse breeders.
2nd place: A bamboo bangle in the style of the Daikawa tribe featuring a horse running and stylised symbols representing the blowing wind and the flowing water of a river.
3rd place: Invitation to a riverside ride to the Waterfall with Kotsume - riding double on Ryuusui, or on a borrowed horse (on D8 or D9).

There may be a small influence reward for the winner. That will depend on some things, but is worth mentioning! ;)

To be quite honest, Chizu had never ridden a horse on her own before; but she didn’t want to let such a minor obstacle stop her from participating. She had seen horses, of course, pulling carts for farmers and merchants. Those cart-pulling horses had seemed pretty docile. How hard could it be?

After getting the pony to eat out of her hand, the Crab woman’s confidence was bolstered, and she swung a leg over the saddle. As the race began, the horse ran like the wind, and it was all Chizu could do to hold on for dear life. She didn’t fall off in front of the crowd, at least; she thanked the Fortunes for that small blessing.

The snow-covered countryside pretty much looked all the same to her, so Chizu and the horse traversed it nearly at random trying to find and retrieve the various colored flags. By the time they had found the last of them, Chizu’s pony was getting a bit winded. Rather than dashing back to the finish line, they ended up returning at a slow trot.

7LM Earn trust with 2 called raises, AWA/Animal Handling TN20: 5d10o10k4 22 (keeping low dice) succeeds for 15 Speed Points
7LM Hold tight with no raises, AGI/Horsemanship +Void Point TN15 (kept 22 for Earn Trust phase): 4d10 29 succeeds for 29 Speed Points and didn’t fall off
7LM Blaze trail, raw Void TN15: 3d10o10k3 6 fails for 0 Speed Points
7LM Home straight, WILL/Horsemanship TN20: 3d10 18 fails for +9 Speed Points

Total: 53 Speed Points

Kawauso, having bonded with Ryu-kun the day before, decided to ride in her sister's planned race. She didn't expect to do well, as she had no skill for riding, but she made a noble effort.

For his part, Ryu-kun was ready to run with Kawauso--he clearly remembered her affection and calling him the best boy the day before. She had to hold him back early in the race while she was still getting her bearings as a rider.

As it turned out, the two made quite a team, and they had little trouble managing the course so long as Ryu-kun's excitement didn't get out of hand.

---------------
Animal Handling (Horses)/ Awareness at TN 10: wow. Passed with a raise. Keeping low makes 10.5 speed points (incl. the raise), roll total was 17 for reference in step 2.

Horsemanship/ Agility at TN 15: passed. 16 speed points.

Hunting (Trailblazing)/ Perception TN 15: passed. 13.5 speed points.

Horsemanship/ Willpower at TN 20: failed but way close. 9.5 speed points.

Total: 49.5 speed points, unless I can't math and depending on whether we were supposed to round on halves of odd results.

by Hantei Kinsen
Kinsen was curious about the horses, and how the samurai could benefit from this advantage point. After all, the Stag do have four legs and they run pretty fast. Despite the Otomo's –– Gusai, more specifically –– focus on boats and the sea, the Stag would do well with a good cavalry. Their proximity to the Ki-rin could facilitate that, too.

A tribeswoman such as the Lady of the Stag has no trouble in finding the best match for the ride, and does know how to treat the beast.

Even though untrained, Kinsen manages to stay on top, and spurs the mount to its full speed with much grace.

She does stops, though, from time to time to check the map. Knowing all too well she wouldn't win, Kinsen merely enjoys the ride.

In the final rush, she commands the horse forward with sheer force of will and a good tug.

Chai Kotsume wrote:For part 1 you've kept an 11; half should be 5.5, but not a big difference.
For part 2 you've PASSED the roll, and it's higher than part 1. So you don't fall (so far so good), but gain 23 Speed points!
You've failed part 3, so no points. That's correct!
For part 4, though, you've PASSED the roll, so you get 20 Speed points!

So you'd have 5.5 + 23 + 0 + 20 = 48.5 points ;)

OOC:
(Sorry for the long delay here folks!

The race had a lower number of participants than Kotsume had expected, but she was still very excited for it, as all participants gave their best despite limited previous experience with horses. The final sprint was particularly exciting, as three of the four competitors came in quite close together, the race being decided at the last moments! The second and third places, particularly, were decided by a neck!

1st Place: Yoshitsune Chizu, with 53 Speed points. Kotsu will congratulate Chizu excitedly for her surprising skill and great promise with horses! Chizu receives an invitation to visit Chai lands near the Great Western River to see some of the family's stables and talk to the family's horse breeders! Yoshitsune Chizu also gains 1 Influence for her win!
2nd Place: Akodo Kawauso, with 49.5 Speed points. Kotsu will be very proud of her sister and receive her with a lively hug - probably making her really awkward... Kotsu will then, laughing, give her a bamboo bangle in the style of the Daikawa tribe featuring a horse running and stylised symbols representing the blowing wind and the flowing water of a river. So much for keeping things in the family
3rd Place: Hantei Kinsen, with 48.5 Speed points. After congratulating the Stag mama, Kotsume will extend to her an invitation to a riverside ride to the Waterfall, whether riding double on Ryuusui, or each on a horse (Kinsen on a borrowed one) (this can happen on D8 or D9... most likely D9?).

"I would love to see the Chai provinces," Chizu said enthusiastically, still a bit flushed from the excitement of the race. "Why, that's not so far from the Crab lands - we're almost neighbors, it would be good to get to know each other. What season is the best time to visit?"

The river girl was equally enthusiastic as she addresses Chizu with a wide smile. "It's not too far indeed! In fact, Shinjo-no-kami-ue seems to hope we can realise just how closer we all are than we realise and how better we work together than by ourselves." She then nods. "Well, having lived close to the Great River all my life, I find it beautiful at all times, Yoshitsune-sama. But I'd suggest the end of summer or the start of autumn if you want a pleasant time. The chilly winds won't have started in earnest yet, and the heat's not so strong as to be unbearable. And then of course the spring brings its own charm with the grasslands near the river blooming into life!"

"Really?" A big smile crossed her face at the idea. "That...that seems too much to ask for. But certainly I would like to practice my riding a bit more!"
