[D4 LA] Player Event: Discourses on Tea and Wine

Post by Bayushi Kogi » Tue Jun 15, 2021 10:20 pm

Event: Discourses on Tea and Wine

There are two essential beverages in the snowbound capital: wine (whether brewed sake or distilled shochu) and tea. Fortunes help Rokugan if either runs out before the snow clears.

For the amusement of the courtiers, several of the resident Scorpion Clan members have organized a grand debate to settle, once and for all, which of these two substances is the true Champion among drinks!

The palace dining hall is stocked with a generous sampling of teas and wines--mostly products of Bayushi's clan lands, supplemented with whatever else the Scorpion could dig up around town. In most respects it looks like a typical drinking party, except that it's also been decorated with two paper "war banners," one for the grand cause of Tea and one for that of Wine. This is to be a war of words, of course...

The Crunch: This event has three steps, each represented by a single roll. Some steps offer a choice of skill options to use for this roll. None of the rolls are considered Contested or otherwise target any specific person.

Magic: It is a bit weird to cut yourself and enact a sacred ritual in the middle of a drinking party. Expect strange looks? However, spells that last for one hour or more will be effective as long as they’re cast before attempting Step 1. Kiho/tattoos are probably also fine.

Part One: Choose Your Fighter

The main reason for attending this gathering is, of course, to sample the wide array of teas and wines from various regions presented by the hosts. Some attendees come just to enjoy all the drinks, but if you wish to join in the debate proper, you will have to choose a side! Pick one:

Advocate for Wine: Test Lore: Sake/Intelligence, another equivalent Lore skill, or Investigation (Notice)/Perception against TN 15; or test Craft: Brewing/Intelligence against TN 10. Success on this roll earns one Wine Point, plus one additional Wine Point per raise. On a failed roll, you choose a random wine rather than one with special qualities to extoll, but you can still proceed with the event.

Advocate for Tea: Test Lore: Tea/Intelligence, another equivalent Lore skill, or Tea Ceremony/Awareness against TN 15; or test Craft: Tea/Intelligence against TN 10. Success on this roll earns one Tea Point, plus one additional Tea Point per raise. On a failed roll, you choose a random tea rather than one with special qualities to extol, but you can still proceed with the event.

Part Two: Lift the Spirits

By the time the actual debate begins, most participants have already drunk a large quantity of wine or tea (or both). The effect of either is usually pleasant, but take care not to go overboard. Before speaking their pieces, participants must:

Team Wine: Test Raw Stamina against TN 15. On a success, you gain one Free Raise to your roll in Step Three, as the drink loosens your creative spirits while leaving your mind alert.
If you fail the roll by 10 or more, you have overindulged—perhaps you have trouble focusing or begin to slur your speech—and you suffer a penalty of -1k0 to your roll in Step 3.
If all your kept dice are 1s, you pass out and cannot complete the event.

Team Tea: Test Raw Void against TN 15. On a success, you gain one Free Raise to your roll in Step Three, as the tea sharpens your wits and awakens your senses.
If you fail the roll by 10 or more, you have overindulged—perhaps you become overly jittery or your mind races out of step with your tongue—and you suffer a penalty of -1k0 to your roll in Step 3.
If all your kept dice are 1s, you have to run to the necessary closet now, yes RIGHT NOW, and cannot complete the event.

Alternatively: You can avoid all risk of overindulgence by surreptitiously spitting out your drinks instead of swallowing, or dumping out your cup on the sly. If you choose this option, test Sleight of Hand/Agility against TN 15. (Yes, it’s a Low Skill.) On a success, you keep a perfectly clear head and gain one Free Raise to your roll in Step Three.
If you fail the roll by ANY AMOUNT, your subterfuge is noticeable. The breach of etiquette is a trivial one, but it does mean your contribution to the debate will be given less weight, since you didn’t properly partake of the beverage you are praising. You suffer a penalty of -1k0 to your roll in Step 3.

Part Three: The Great Contention

Each participant, in turn, is given a brief opportunity to artfully praise the virtues of their chosen beverage or subtly denigrate the drawbacks of the rival drink. The cleverer and more elegant the discourse, the more praise from the amused crowd!

Test Courtier (Rhetoric)/Awareness, Perform: Oratory/Awareness, or Games: Sadane/Awareness against TN 15. Success on this roll earns one Tea or Wine Point (depending which side you have chosen), plus one additional Tea or Wine Point per raise.

Determining the Winners:

Ties will be broken by the number of Raises in Step 3; further ties broken by the roll total in that step.

Top scorers:
  • The two characters with the most and the second-most Tea Points will each receive an elegant ceramic tea bowl. The lip of the bowl is trimmed with silver, commonly believed to tarnish in the presence of poison.
  • The two characters with the most and the second-most Wine Points will each receive an elegant inlaid sake cup. The inside surface of the cup is chased with a design in silver, commonly believed to tarnish in the presence of poison.
Overall:
  • If the total number of Tea Points is higher than the total number of Wine Points, Tea is acclaimed as the Champion of Drinks. Conversely, if Wine Points are higher than Tea Points, Wine is acclaimed as the Champion of Drinks.
  • The first and second place scorers for the winning side earn the courtesy titles of Right Captain and Left Captain of [Tea/Wine], respectively. This has absolutely no official force or mechanical effect, of course.
  • Everyone who earned at least one Point for the winning side is given a drinkable trophy: either a small package of Silver Needles tea from the Scorpion mountains, or a small bottle of rich Brown Sugar Shochu brewed near Bayushi’s stronghold, depending on which drink is the victor.

Ayano was gleeful to attend this, it was the sort of sophisticated thing that appealed to her inner desires.

Unfortunately her inner desires didn't include knowledge of tea...and no particular blend came to mind. Though one seemed right on the edge.

She held the tea well, letting the warmth calm her mind.

Regardless of her failure to think of a particularly good blend, the young Lioness gave an impassioned speech worth of Lord Ikoma himself. Though Lord Ikoma would face palmed to hear someone speak of the tea being superior to wine, likely while wondering what was wrong with the poor girl.

Satsuki tried very hard to pick the best tea. But she really didn't know much about tea apart from drinking it. She was well experienced with consuming tea for its relaxing purposes so relaxed she was.

"This tea..." she held up her cup. "Is just hot leaf juice. And that's what all tea is to be perfectly frank. The cup is nice too I suppose, but that's not the point! The point is, even if all tea is hot leaf juice, some hot leaf juice is better than others. Especially in how you prepare it... not like this one though, this one tastes pretty meh."

"But a good cup of tea beats wine any day! Because wine if overconsumed makes you dumb, and then drunk, and then you puke and that's just not nice. Whereas if tea is overconsumed you just get the jitters, and you need to relieve yourself a lot, but it doesn't make you stupid like wine does."

Tea was the superior choice, this was clear, and of all her adopted children it was most worthy and beloved in Tsubaki's eyes.

As such the Crane's, unsurprising, defense of the drink was incredibly detailed, layered, and exacting while still managing to keep the attention of the audience without pause given her strong and polished delivery.

Kuu did not particularly have a personal favorite between them, as they both had their merits. But he was far more familiar with tea, and so felt more comfortable speaking on it's behalf. He seemed to have a completely novice understanding, but made passable arguments in favor of the drink. It certainly wasn't as well demonstrated as others, but he was apparently not completely uncultured.

The big Crab woman simply could not believe it .. would no one stand up to defend the honor of the Fortune of Alcohol? Chizu rose to her full (and considerable) height. Her face was a bit flushed from having drunk a free sample of the shochu. Well, maybe a few free samples of shochu.

“Tea is all very well during quiet times on dull days,” Chizu proclaimed. “But at night when you’re ready to party with your friends, which drink is it that will make merry with you? Shochu!” She slammed a meaty fist into her other palm for emphasis.

“And at that party, when you’ve met someone good-looking, and things are heating up .... which drink do you want to share with them? Shochu!” She slammed her fist again.

“And after a battle where you've seen both friends and enemies perish, but you’ve survived by the skin of your teeth... when you need to feel something because you’re still alive…. what’s the drink for you? Shochu!” She slammed her fist once more, before stepping down from the debate stage.

It was, perhaps, not as polished as the other courtiers’ arguments… but it was certainly heartfelt.

"Ladies and gentleman of the supposed... crowd, this is Lord Chu-Baka and he is a bushi... and he comes from the province of Kash-ik, but he lives in the village of En-dor now think about that, that does not make sense!" went her rambling but somehow coherent argument for the joys of tea.

"Why would a Bushi, an 8-foot-tall Bushi, want to live in En-dor, with a bunch of hairy peasants? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this argument? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this argument! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a tea enthusiast defending a major staple of court, and I'm talkin' about Chu-Baka! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed crowd, it does not make sense! If Chu-Baka lives in En-dor, you must acquit! The tea defense rests."

A most viable and deadly defense of Tea.

Hikaru was a supporter of tea. He was a supporter of Lady Doji. How could he not be?

And yet, when the time came to offer his defense of it, his soft words, spoken without particular passion or enthusiasm, did not stir any to the cause of tea.

He frowned as he stepped away. Perhaps he needed to approach this sort of thing differently...

The river girl was otterly surprised to see so many speaking in favour of this infusion of leaves, although not as surprised to see the Crane rallying en masse to its support - she'd heard lady Shinjo enjoyed the drink, and she had apparently picked up the habit from her Kami sister. Some of the defenses of tea she heard, on the other hand, were not only surprising, but also... worrying.

One way or another, she knew alcoholic drinks best, as some at least were part and parcel of the Daikawa's traditions - as she had found out even as a teenager.

She chose a plum wine with particularly marked sourness that complemented its sweetness and its alcoholic bite well, and drank happily (and some would say liberally), but managed to keep her mind clear enough for a speech in favour of the drink so few seemed to be defending.

"I'll have to stand with my good friend Yoshitsune-san here in this matter, minasan. It is true, or so I've heard, that tea can help keep one's mind clear - but when it's one's heart one wants clear? When we wish to bring our hearts closer, before and after a battle, during or after a celebration? When we want to bring our hearts and souls closer to the spirits, to feel each other, and feel the strength of our ancestors? When it is
our traditions we want to hold? Much as I can respect the value of this new, soft drink... for most, if not all of us, it's not to it we turn, but to the strong bite and intense flavour of the great variety of wines we have among our many peoples in the Empire! From those in the coast to those in the mountains, from those in forest to those who hail from grasslands - and rivers, as my folk did... does! Our traditions, our celebrations of happiness and mourning - and the traditions we now establish besides our guiding Kami - it is with our variety of wines they're held, and so they should continue!"

As the finishes, the excitement fades a bit and she notices she may have gone a bit too far here and there... but she had definitely made her point, she thought, as she gulped down yet another cup of the umeshu she had chosen.

Kuni showed up to this event. Free wine after all. He looks over the selection and finds a nice mild brew. It won't do to get drunk in front of the Emperor. He begins drinking until he gets to the point that he loosens up, but doesn't lose his self control. Unfortunately, his gruffness prevents him from making any solid points.

Kinsen was torn apart. Two different drinks for two very different moments. She sees too many advocating for tea, and, although she does agree with many of the topics, the sake had to be defended, too. There's no ying without yang, after all. Such is the void that unite the beverages of Rokugan.

Such anxiety, though, clouds her judgement of the best sake to pick that she actually takes someone else's cup that was filled. Then, she downs the cup and slams it on the tray.

Noticing her mistake, she looks at the cup's owner and bows apologetically, "Gomen, I... got rather too excited about all this. Please accept my humble apologies."

It's a strange thing that even a lush like Susumu would speak out in favor of tea, but he is falling on that side of it today.

"Let no man, woman, child, spirit or kami dispute my love of wine, for it has great virtue in bringing joy. However, it's source of strength, the highest quality product comes from the purest extraction of rice, and the purest water. In contrast, tea is made greater by variety! There was many blends, many ways to ferment. Herbs that separately stimulate and liven a cup on their own may turn deadly if mixed, and so it takes greater care and practice to continuously master a cup. And then, there is the water temperature used..."

It's mostly things that Machiko had ranted at him over, repeated with more flourish.

Gusai is a sailor. Sailors love drink. This is known, accepted, and often borne out in story, in song, and in fact. So it is no surprise that his eye alights on the assorted sake, and he soon lifts up one bottle with plain markings, commenting with character knowledge that the player does not share about the bottle's provenance, the small coastal village where it is made, its remarkable ability to endure the rigors of transport across the waves, its peculiarly pleasant pairing with saltier foods, and the wonderful little eatery pointedly upwind of the brewery where a person can find just delectable little morsels on a fine evening.

"The Hopeful Venture often calls in at that port," he adds. "I'd be glad of company next time I go."

Genji arrived and stood up, pulling a cup of nice shochu in his hand. "Minna-sama. I understand your love of tea. But! Should we not give the same love to a different nectar, one distilled for its pure essence?" He raised the cup.

"Kampai!!"

The shochu flowed through him, a big goofy grin on his face.

Inspired by her cat friend, and rather against her better judgement, Akodo Kawauso made an appearance at the discourse event. She was rather glad that she did, after seeing the overwrought and almost ludicrous arguments for tea over wine. Such foolishness would not go unchallenged...

The Lion was no expert on wine, there being relatively few choices that were consistently available back home, but her keen hunter's eye spied a small but promising looking bottle of something from the Scorpion lands. "Well, Bayushi-san brought me here, so I better dance with the one who brought me," she says with a chuckle.

Kawauso turned out to like that vintage very much. Almost too much, but she kept her mind focused, and she was ready to debate with any of these terrible leaf water lauders. Oh, that's a good line...

Unfortunately, Kawauso's great lines didn't quite land as intended, leaving the impression that she might have over-indulged the wine when she had simply over-indulged her passion for being right. Greatly disappointed that her wisdom didn't have more effect, the tall samurai-ko sulkily looked forward to the sumai tournament. She didn't exactly know the rules, but she was sure going to hit someone.

Akodo Moshi can speak for the virtues of tea, but she doesn't know scorpion blends too well. So her arguments are only vauge at best.

"I like tea. It offers a number of physical and spiritual benefits. Wine however," she paused to sample the wine she'd selected, drinking more than the sip she had intended. "It tastes really good!"

With apparently nothing left to add, she drank more and listened to others debate.

Wh'rr'kk Attempts to participate in the tasting, choosing the sake, he examines it and actually turns out to be well educated on the subject. His argument of course being the sake is a more universally enjoyed drink amongst non-human races.
