Rei was not as skilled an artist as others in her family. She preferred more practical craft and her mystical studies took priority. She did enjoy sculpting, however. She had never sculpted a tree before, but she was good with Knives.

. . . and just before he could reach it the fox grabbed it and danced a couple of feet further away. Then he dropped it between his paws again.

"If he's doing what I think he's doing, I'd just give up now. He has no intention of letting you have it back. He'll probably be carrying it around for a few days now until we find it buried under a cushion somewhere in the Imperial rooms."

Yuzuru made a clicking noise, which Hsieh-Hsieh pretended not to hear.

"Ah." Hikaru said. He turned to look at the fox. "I don't want it, anyway." Hikaru said, shaking his head. "It's yours now."

He made one more try for it.

Aha!

Phi made her move, a diving toward the distracted fox, her right hand outstretched.

"Ah." Hikaru said. He turned to look at the fox. "I don't want it, anyway." Hikaru said, shaking his head. "It's yours now."

Foxes did not grow to Hsieh-Hsieh's majestic age of six and a half by being so easily caught. Plus he didn't want the kimono today. He grabbed his stick, dodged left to avoid Phi and then right and forwards to avoid Hikaru. He ended up next to Yuzuru again, just with stick in mouth this time.

The Consort noticed the return, hard not to what with the tail thumping the ground beside him and sighed.

"I thought you would have grown out of this by now old friend."

"I fear, Uncle Yuzuru, that he, like me, is what father would call 'incorrigible.'"

Normally she would have remembered to keep her mouth shut while adults were talking, but...

Fox.

[Yoshitsune Chizu]

Apparently gardening and tree trimming was a thing you do at court, so Chizu resolved to give it a try. Taking a small cutting from a likely-looking tree, she carefully replanted it in a little pot. This isn’t too hard so far, she thought!


Chizu mentally pictured her favorite tree back home, a tall leafy tree with many limbs that she had enjoyed climbing as a child. With that template in mind, she used the little snips to began cutting away anything that didn’t fit that picture. After a few minutes, she had reshaped the stick roughly into a cone-shaped form - but it wasn’t really a tree. It wasn’t really like her tree. So she snipped away a little more. Then a little more.

Soon, most of the branches were gone or trimmed to mere stumps. It… still didn’t look like her tree. No children would be climbing it, or swinging from its branches. The temptation to cut away a little more was strong, but Chizu reluctantly made herself put the garden snips down before any more plant material was lost.

At least it was kind of tree-shaped?

[Bayushi Kogi]

Kogi is intrigued by the concept the Crane guests have presented. So it's a bit like dwarfing a fruit tree? But... even smaller?

She casts about for a while before settling on a young nanten seedling that is still holding on to its red leaves and a few berries, carefully digging it up and settling it into one of the comically tiny pots. Now, what would make it look more like a tree as it grows...?

She stares at the little specimen for quite a while before making a few precise cuts. The result is, well, it's passable!

Kuu receives the painting and thanks Hikaru. The painting is officially bound for the first temple of the Order of Heroes. Each of the kami are heroes in their own right after all and having a piece of art made by the hand of a revered kami would allow for a properly appointed shrine.

[Yuzuru]

The true winner of the contest chewed his stick happily as Yuzuru congratulated the winners on tending to tiny trees he couldn't see.

He declined to comment that these trees sort of described part of the ever continuing argument between himself and Lady Doji, where he wished for freedom of expression for all while Doji counselled social restrictions and order.

[Saru Yatsufusa]

Yatsufusa would humbly accept the bonsai tended by Kami Doji herself. It was an honor that he could not repay, to have something that at one point was cared and nurtured by the Daughter of Heavens was beyond what he could fathom as a simple ningen.
